Less is is more - Hardware and details can look cheap even on expensive items. If you are buying a £50 bag the hardware isn't going to be high end so try and keep any hardware to a minimum.
Faux suede generally looks better than faux leather.
Keep it simple. A simple dress will look better than one covered in embellishments.
If you are buying jewellery it is better to invest in a couple of simple, classic pieces that you can wear over and over rather than loud and gaudy pieces. It is so much harder to make a big piece look expensive, if you look at some of the really high end brands even they can look very tacky.
Bright colours are harder to make look expensive than neutrals so try and buy bright colours when you can afford to spend a bit more.
Tonal dressing i.e wearing all one colour generally looks more expensive than wearing 3 or 4 colours. At most stick to 2 colours.
Don't overdo the trends. Incorporate one or two small pieces to update your outfit but keep the rest classic.
Make sure it fits. The cheapest item will look a million times better if it fits . If you can manage it then see a tailor to ensure it is a perfect fit. You will wear it a lot more if it looks amazing.
This dress in the picture was £8, but it fits and suits me so looks good.
